Advocacy plays a crucial role in creating positive change and advocating for important issues. By speaking and collaborating with elected officials, community leaders and decision-makers, members and supporters have helped advance dignity, equity and justice in Alabama. We are incredibly proud of our fellows, who helped lead a rally at the Capitol to oppose SB129, a bill that would ban diversity and inclusion efforts at public colleges and universities.
As a member of national networks fighting for immigrant rights, we oppose anti-immigrant policies across the country that push our communities into the shadows. On March 13, we joined our GLAHR colleagues in a rally in Atlanta to urge elected representatives to stop anti-immigrant legislation that forces police to check people’s migratory status. These policies have been implemented to terrorize our communities and lead us to fear and distrust local authorities even more. Our communities in Alabama will also be harmed by this law, as many people travel to Atlanta for appointments at different countries' consulates.
It is critical that we stay informed and respond quickly to the coordinated attacks on democracy that are unfolding across the South, exposing a disturbing trend of anti-democratic legislation sweeping through our states. |
