Fighting Back Against Anti-Immigrant Sentiment in Albertville
In early August, Albertville, AL became the center of controversy as photos of people boarding charter buses sparked a wave of anti-immigrant rhetoric on social media. Alabama State Senator comments
further fueled the situation, connecting local events with U.S. border policy. By August 13th, a local church meeting became a venue for expressing anti-immigrant sentiment.
ACIJ strongly condemns the use of racist and xenophobic language against Haitian people in Albertville. Read our full statement here.

Illegal Voter Roll Purges Targeting Naturalized Citizens
On August 19th, ACIJ, alongside Campaign Legal Center, SPLC, ACLU-Alabama, and others, demanded that Alabama Secretary of State Wes
Allen halt his plan to purge over 3,000 voters from the rolls based on outdated noncitizen IDs. This action violates the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) and mirrors practices previously rejected by the Eleventh Circuit.
Allen’s plan to remove citizens who may have naturalized since receiving noncitizen IDs is unlawful. We stand firm in defending our rights and will not tolerate this abuse against our communities.Read our letter of concern here
We take great pride in Teresita Flores, a community leader from Alexander City, who represented ACIJ and the Latino community at The Blackburn Institute’s 30th Anniversary Symposium at the University of Alabama. She participated in a panel discussion titled “Alabama’s Latinos: Where They Are, Who They Are, and Where They’re Going.”

We are also immensely proud of Aurora Sanchez, a dedicated and tireless community leader based in Dothan. During the recent visit of the Mexican Consulate to Mobile, she played a crucial role by providing valuable information to the Mexican community. Her efforts significantly contributed to bridging the gap between the community and the resources available through the consulate.
August 30:
We hosted a vibrant Labor Rights workshop at the Nehemiah Center, using Popular Education to empower participants and discuss various work experiences. Our team is also engaging with day laborers, distributing flyers at local supermarkets, and setting up resource tables at schools.
